Meet the Team

Wes Landman - Yonge St./Hillcrest

Wes, snow sports and boot fit expert, has been delivering the ultimate ski experience at Sporting Life for over a decade and has been working in the ski industry for almost two. As the head trainer for boot and ski in the Greater Toronto Area, Wes uses his knowledge and expertise to set Sporting Life’s future boot and ski experts up for success. When he’s not in-store, you can find him on the hills testing all brands in skis for Sporting Life and providing his expert opinion.

Jeff Salter - Hillcrest

A self-proclaimed “lifer” in the ski industry, Jeff got his start in skiing the age of 13 and has been in the business on and off the slopes ever since. He worked in ski shops as a teenager and eventually moved on to be a ski industry sales representative. He’s taught, coached, worked as a ski racing staff member, and was even an on-hill technician. In the past 25 years, you could say he’s done it all from managing ski shops to fitting boots and tuning skis, and of course, making lifelong friends along the way through a shared passion for the sport. Whether you’ve been skiing for years or are just getting into the sport, Jeff is dedicated to skiers old and new, especially kids who are just learning the lay of the land.

Scott Harris - Yonge St.

Scott has been skiing for 42 years, and for 34 of those years, he’s been tuning skis. In fact, he’s the head ski tuner at the Yonge Street Sporting Life location. Experts at Sporting Life don’t just bring their passion for skiing to the community; they extend it so that their expertise can be a service to avid, casual and new skiers. And, Scott is certainly no exception. He’s worked with Ski Canada tuning skis for testing to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for Canadians hitting the hills.

Sandy Webster - Calgary Market Mall

Sandy’s lifelong passion for skiing and ski racing first began in Vancouver on the amazing North Shore Mountains, specifically Grouse Mountain. While in University, Sandy launched his career in the boot fitting trade, becoming the first Superfeet certified Orthotic ski technician in Canada in the late ‘70s, and has since used the skills he’s adopted with several manufacturers as a retail trainer and teacher, World Cup service man and high performance consultant. Currently based in Calgary, Sandy continues to work with World Cup and Olympic athletes and medalists.

Boyd Callaway - Calgary Market Mall

In 1986, Boyd entered the world of coaching and doing service work with alpine athletes, working with club teams, provincial teams and national teams both in Canada and internationally. Fast forward to 2019, and Boyd had continued to make a mark in the industry. It was that year that he provided service and coaching support to the Canadian women’s team who competed in the 2019 World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships in Val Di Fassa, Italy. He even worked as a support coach and service man to the 2019 development team and national team camps in the spring of 2019 at Panorama Mountain Resort in B.C.

At one point in time, he was also the proud owner of a small ski service shop focused on providing racing service to regional athletes in the Calgary area. As a National Technical Delegate for Alpine Canada, you could say he’s extremely passionate about making race skis “go just a little faster”. At Sporting Life, Boyd takes pride in using his knowledge and the very best tools and machines in the country to do just that!

Chris Powers - Ottawa

Chris has been in the ski industry for more than 15 years. He got his start with the National Capital Outaouais (NCO) regional ski team as their head coach and continued on an impressive streak in accomplishments, including obtaining Alpine Canada Performance Level, Licensing and Certification and earning two spots with Alpine Canada as the men's Europa Cup coach and men's development coach. Chris is also the former head coach of the Ski Québec Alpin men’s team and club coach at Mont Ste-Marie Ski Resort. Currently, he is the Ski World Cup coach for the men’s Canadian Speed team.

When you walk into the Ottawa Sporting Life store, there’s one thing that does not go unnoticed – the talent and expertise he shares from the work he’s done in optimizing equipment set-up for athletes, from juniors to scoring world cup points. And, did we mention he’s also the boot technician for the Canadian ski team? Chris has worked closely with factory service technicians and manufacturers, building boots to World Cup standards and personalizing set-ups based on individual foot function and biomechanics.

Bill Ford - Collingwood/Hillcrest

Bill has been skiing for over 50 years and has also been in the retail space fixing skis and boots for nearly the same amount of time. Over the years, he’s challenged those that want to go fast to let him tune their skis to make it happen. He knows a thing or two about the need for speed in skiing; he was a ski instructor and professional ski patroller during several winter seasons and athlete support for multiple ski camps worldwide. A fun fact about Bill is that he isn’t just an avid skier and industry guru, he’s a devoted cyclist, taught sailing and windsurfing, and co-holds the Guinness World Record for the first crossing of Lake Ontario on a sailboard.

Andy Hotson - Collingwood

Andy has been skiing all his life, so it was only natural for him to join Sporting Life and help the brand grow the sport. Since 1997, Andy has been bringing his insight and know-how to the Collingwood community of skiers as a Sporting Life Store Manager, and, since 2002, he’s played an integral role as race support. When it comes to evaluating product, he’s provided support there too as Sporting Life’s on-hill ski tester for all brands. On his days off, there isn’t a moment wasted outdoors and on the slopes; you can find him skiing with his kids.

Ben Provost Desjardins - Ottawa

As Sporting Life’s Service Shop Manager, Ben is who you would call a ‘Texpert’. His experience ranges from racquet stringing and bicycle tuning to ski and snowboard tuning and skate repair. A Master Technician and expert in ski base repair and ski and snowboard tuning, he’s provided his skills and know-how to both customers as their service man and associates as a regional service shop trainer. Ben has learned from the best in the business and passed on his experience to train and develop the next generation. To help shape how associates learn and grasp essential skills, Ben has been instrumental in creating and leading certification programs that have ensured the highest knowledge and workmanship in service shops across the country.

Scott Shaver - Ottawa

Scott wasn’t even finished high school when he latched onto the excitement of the sporting goods industry. Soon after, he fulfilled the role as General Manager of Boots and Boards and Bikes Retail and eventually led his own vision as the Founder and President of two sporting goods companies which both focused on ski.

Although Scott considers himself a multi-sport enthusiast, competitive athlete and lover of the outdoors, he’s most notably recognized for his achievements on the slopes. He was a member of the 1982-1987 Canadian National Ski team on the Downhill squad, and his career highlights include: racing the Hahnenkamm downhill at Kitzbühel, Austria, finishing 21st in Schladming World Cup DH, 4th overall in the Europa Cup DH standings, and winning Bronze in both downhill and Super-G in the Canadian Championship. Scott also earned the Ottawa Sports Excellence Award for the most outstanding regional athlete in 1984.

As the Service Shop lead at Ottawa’s Sporting Life location, Scott brings the energy, excitement and expertise from on the slopes to off the slopes, servicing Ottawa with all their equipment needs.
