How should a cycling shoe fit compared to a regular shoe?

Much snugger than a running shoe. Your heel shouldn't slip when you pull up on the pedal, and minimal extra toe room ensures efficient power transfer.

A two-bolt cleat system recessed into the sole, allowing far more comfortable walking off the bike than exposed road cleats, commonly used for mountain biking and spin classes.

Can I use road shoes for a spin class?

Only if your bike accepts a 3-bolt cleat. Road shoes are slippery and awkward to walk in across a gym floor, so many studios favor 2-bolt SPD compatibility instead.

Why are cycling shoes so stiff?

Stiffness prevents the sole from flexing over the pedal, ensuring power transfers directly into the drivetrain rather than being absorbed by a bending sole.

What are dial-closure (Boa) cycling shoes?

A steel cable tightened via a turning dial offers precise, even pressure distribution and can be adjusted on the fly while riding, unlike traditional laces.
